This is Beth Thornton's husband as Ming!

The character is Wonder Woman's mother, Hippolyta, from DC Comics. I've also attached a picture that I was working to try to emulate. I met the artist who drew this picture a few years ago at a convention and he "got" what I was aiming for, so I'm very happy with the end result!
I made the costume using Simplicity 3647 by you, View E, in lavender and purple costuming satin. For the girdle, I used gold lame, and machine-embroidered the eagle and rope panels over a layer of wadding to give it a more 3D effect. In my original girdle, I used boning, per the pattern instructions, but I found the bones poked through the edges of the belt and stuck into me. The current version has a heavy-weight plastic backing, and then a layer of towelling (with built in pockets so I have somewhere to keep my glasses and phone) to help stop the issue of perspiration! The gauntlets are simple lycra tubes, and the necklace was inherited from my mother.

I like the fact she put a pocket into the girdle! These are things I don't think about when you are wearing a costume all day.
And, if we are going to talk about sewing for family members, I have to show you this one next! Kami Latorre made this for her daughter, who was Sacagawea for a scchool living history project. What a beautiful labor of love. I hope it gets saved for grandchildren. This Native American pattern was made with direct guidance from a Native American woman who was tired of sewing BAD and wrong patterns for Indian clothing. |
Now this from Kate ... aka Doctor of Phabric. As for costumes.. I'm not sure if this counts since I only used half the pattern, but I used 4080 (the kimono pattern) for my Wa Lolita dress a few years ago--loooved the sleeve lining method! From me ... of course it counts. I like to think my patterns just help people be creative or be creative faster. You can see more of Kate's work on her Facebook page PhD Cosplay ... and Go to her blog to read her step by step journey to making this creation. |
