Lets see how many of these I can do by next week!
Here is my sewing kit "to go" or as the Brits would say a "take away" sewing kit. Now that I've figured out what s0lid colors I want to go with each of the dotted fabric, I've begun to cut all the hexagons for each circular block, which I then can take to the doctor's office, in the car, if someone else is driving ;-) .... or anywhere. To keep things organized, I decided to sew together the hexagons for each block by just passing a needle twice through and tying the thread. I hope I get fast at this. Every side of each hexagon can be done with one pass of the needle, but it's a LOT of sides. My quilting friend (initials HB ... you know who you are) thinks I'm a little crazy doing a hand sewn quilt. Time will tell. I sure hope she will coach me through the assembly of the quilt after the top is all pieced. I am learning. The first block I pressed all the seams open. But have decided it's faster and better to press the seams towards the print. The printed fabric is thinner than the solid and it actually looks better from the front when pressed this way.
Lets see how many of these I can do by next week!

I love that there are people that have the patience for this quilt block. I finished one in the fall that a co-worker found in her daughter-in-law's parents house. The lady who did it sewed it all by hand and the "binding" was another row of hexies that wrapped around back. I ended up tying it with buttons in the middle of each flower. It took me a whole season of Mad Men to complete, which I imagine was nothing compared to the time it took her to sew it all.

I absolutely love long handwork projects like this - I find them meditative, and the opportunities to work on them dwarf my available machine time. (We've discovered it's inconsiderate to sew by machine while watching movies with my husband.) I'm presently in love with the Alabama Chanin appliqué techniques, and I enjoyed doing an embellished shoulder and pocket so much, that I just went ahead and sewed the entire B5950 dress by hand, decoratively picking the zipper and the seams. I really think I got it done sooner than if it had languished waiting for me to get time in the sewing room!
