A very effective costume can be made without being completely historically correct.  This basic costume dress pattern can be used for so many periods and for so many occasions.  I think it must be used all the time by people sewing costumes for community and school theatrical productions.

You can see it is the exact same pattern in 3 different size ranges. It is a good fitting basic bodice, sleeve and skirt that can be varied in so many different ways. I recommend The Little Bodice Book for easy and good instruction for doing many variations.
