#1305 - Princess Costume detailing

All three of these dresses use the same bodice and skirt patterns. But how is the blue one so drapey and close to the body and the pink one so puffy?

Well, I will show you how I did this along with the other princess details.

First of all, it's fabric choice. The blue one is made of a slinky knit which hangs and drapes beautifully. The pink one is a stiff satin and ...

Picture
It has a built in petticoat made of pink netting.
Picture
This petticoat is the same pattern as the skirt with a flounce ruffle added. This photo shows the petticoat for the doll and the girl ready to be sewn into the waist seam.
Picture
The cumberbund style waistband is gathered at the sides and tack down to create and control all the gathers.
Picture
So, now I have attached all the skirts and petticoat and am playing with the trims and bows and I HATE IT! I thought I wanted dark pink bows. And the fun pink petal trim at the neck doesn't work either.  The elements are not cooperating.
Picture
I drew pink bows ... but it just looks bad.  Maybe the pink for the dress is a lighter shade than I had imagined ... I've got to go shopping and try other things.
Picture
After much playing, fussing and buying fabrics I won't use, I decide the safe course is to make the bows gold like the over skirt and change the neck trim to white pearls that coordinate with the now white fingerless gloves. So, after preparing 6 large ties for the girl and 6 small ties for the doll to make the bows for the skirt I will tie them.
I made a video to show you my way to tie bows and keep them somewhat symmetrical.
Picture
Here is the line up of bows for doll and girl.
Picture
After the outer net skirt is gathered and attached to ribbons that hang from the waist seam between the pink skirt and the gold mesh shirt to make puffs, then the bows are tacked on.

A pretty pink princess, but you can make your princess any color.

This reminds me so much of the costumes my mom made for me as a child. She made such beautiful things, and she loves that I'm still costuming in my old age. :D
The fairy dress is adorable. I hope some little girl's mom makes these for her so she has those beautiful memories too.

I forgot to mention; I'm saving your video for future bow making. I just recently made 13 bows on a costume, gradually getting larger, and wished I'd seen this first. I'm one of those that "tie them like a shoelace" people.

Thanks for the video. Knew there was a way to do it that way but hadn't seen it demo'd. Will be handy for bows on cards as well! And I agree that while the sketch of the pink dress looks fine, the actual version without the neck tri and with the gold bows is better.
