Well folks ... I feel as if I have arrived!

After almost 30 years designing for McCall's and then Simplicity I am going to be a "featured teacher" at a BIG sewing Expo!!!  The American Sewing Expo in Michigan ...
visit their website.
Up until now, these kind of expos featured fashion and home deco, but this year the forward thinking organizers of this event have decided to turn their eyes to costumes.

About time ... really! Costume sewing is a huge part of the home sewing industry.

You might want to enter the costume contest!  Here is a link to the rules.
But, there will still be plenty of fashion and quilting. This is from a recent press release ...

“We are bringing in fashion and costume designers, couture specialists, corset makers and teaching professionals for beginner to expert sewing experiences that include live challenges, seminars, workshops, contests, demonstrations, shopping and ‘sew’ much fun,” said Janet Pray, show producer of the largest independent consumer sewing show in the country. “Ideas for sewing, fashion and quilting will be found in the hands-on projects, instruction and crafter do-it-yourself programs that are featured at the fashion shows, classes and displays.”

I will be teaching an all day class about how to turn an old sweater or two or three with added trims and buttons into a fanciful and special piece, like the one I wore at the Costume Academy in St. Louis this year and Costume Con in Toronto.

All sorts of things can be done with godets and ruffles. You should walk out with a finished garment at the end of the one day class.

But, there will be TONS of things to do and see, lots of vendors (machines, fabrics, pattern, etc), several contests, fashion shows and MORE!

Check out the brochure ... it has all the class descriptions and registration forms.

Below is an excerpt from the latest newsletter from the Expo:

Focus on Faculty

Meet Simplicity Freelance Pattern Designer, Andrea Schewe
Andrea Schewe has designed for the Simplicity Pattern Company for nearly 25 years. She is known for her wide variety of costume patterns ranging from ones that are historically based to quick fun costumes for Halloween in sizes for the whole family, the dog, too. And because of her background designing for the toy and fashion industries, she also designs doll clothes, soft toys as well as home decor items and fashion accessories.

She comes from a family of great seamstresses and got her start in her teens helping in her mother's costume shop at the local college, which lead to working in the professional costume shops in New York City when she moved there to study music. Work in costume shops comes and goes as new plays and ballets do. So, this gave Andrea the chance to work in the fashion district. After her two boys were born she was employed full time as a freelance designer for several toy companies and McCall's Patterns. Simplicity became aware of her work and offered her a contract a few years later and she has happily worked for them ever since. Visit Andrea's Blog.
