Fringe Tutorial

Making fringe starts out like making a pom-pon, but is really easier.
There are two pillows with fringe around the edges.  View F has purchased fringe, but the fringe for view B is made with a skein of worsted weight yarn.
Picture
Since the fringe for this pillow is supposed to be 3" long when finished, use a 4" piece of cardboard (or in my case a 4" pad of note paper) to wrap the yarn around. Cut it off the cardboard along one side making many 8" pieces of yarn.
Picture
Next, fold the yarn pieces so that they are all facing toward the center of the pillow and stitch a second time close to the fold.

I wrap and cut as I go, because it's really impossible to know how many pieces are going to be needed straight off.

Lay the center of the yarn pieces 1/4" from the cut edge of the pillow. Machine stitch down the center of the yarn.

Complete the pillow, sewing on the back with 1/2" seam allowance. Gently steam the yarn straight and use a 3" paper guide to trim the yarn even.
VOILA' ... you have custom made fringe.

I've got to get back on my dress.  It's almost finished.  Next time I'll show you that.

I like the fold-over-and-stitch-again method--so much less unruly than my old method of folding before attaching. And it gives me a new use for those variegated yarns I'm so attracted to. Thanks!
