Ikat follow up

A package arrived Wednesday (2 days ago) after I posted the blog about Ikat weaving ... guess what it was?? ... more Ikat!!

So, I'm going to tell you how you can get some neat handwoven fabric without the horrible jet lag. And it was pretty horrible ...
Picture
To explain this purchase, I have to show you the silk fabric I bought at the silk farm in Cambodia. Click here to read about my visit.

Most of the things for sale in the store at the silk farm were ready to wear garments, accessories and home decor items, but there was a corner with fabric. I didn't want to get a fine lightweight silk, because I don't really need the kind of garment that would be made out of that kind of fabric, so I was looking at the fabric made with raw silk.  I chose this one because of the warp and weft were different colors.  I always like that effect.

But, when I unpacked it, I wasn't sure what it would go with.  Anyway ...

Another day I was snooping around on ebay and typed in "handwoven fabric" and all sorts of neat stuff popped up. Lots of fabric from India and Southeast Asia!  And this vintage Ikat Sari woven with red and green, the same colors as my silk, selling for $10 for the whole piece with shipping $7.99.  Unbelievable!! really.  Totally worth the gamble of having it sent clear round the world.
Picture
It is honest to goodness cotton Ikat with jacquard woven bands along the borders (the little circle motif).  It's a lightweight fabric, almost a lawn and there are 5 1/2 yards, with the last half yard this beautiful band of the black pattern.
Picture
The two fabrics really go well together.

What to make??? I've lots of yardage, so something with a full skirt and then a jacket of the silk? We will see.
Give Ebay a try ...
Here are links to some fabrics on sale the day I'm writing this Sept. 25, 2013.  Read the descriptions closely though.  Some are being sold by the yard or meter and some are entire lengths of fabric like the sari I just bought.

Grey and White Ikat from India

Multi color Ikat from India
Handwoven raw silk
Beautiful vintage silk sari

It's hard to stop.  There are a lot of very nice fabrics for sale on Ebay. Take a look!

I love browsing the antique and vintage saris on ebay--the cotton and the silk. It's good to know that many sari descriptions use the term "art silk" to distinguish the polyester/manmade fabrics from "pure silk" natural fabrics.
