Here is the back of my fairy sweater (can you see the wings?) that I wore Saturday at the Midwest Costume Academy.
I made it out of a couple sweaters I picked up at my favorite thrift store.
Since usually I have to stop and document everything as I make it, keeping track of all materials used and making patterns for every little piece, it is so much fun to just dive in and play with fabric ... I that is what I did.

I started of with an XL "V" neck sweater and with it inside out on my form, I pinned bias tape for the new neckline.
Zig zagged along both sides and cut away the part of the sweater I didn't want.
Then, because this sweater was too big for me, I was able to pin in a bunch of outward going tucks for shape and design.
Then I started making slits for many godets. I measured nothing ... just eyeballed everything.

My godets are all irregular, which is exactly what I wanted.
You can see I relied heavily on my serger. All edges, including the hems, were stitched with special rayon serging thread.
You may have noticed the bottom ribbing had been cut off. I saved it for the neck ruffle. First I serged it all along the cut edge, then ...
ran a gathering stitch along the other edge and set in on my new scooped neckline.
