Pattern 1122 - girl's skirts, design choices

Just a quick blog today to show a couple options for the skirt with the sloping hem.

I will show sewing next week, but I want that to be a useful, informative blog and those take a while ...

Anyway, because these tulle skirts are skirts and not tutus, they have a solid underskirt lining, so you can't see through them.

My thought was the lining shouldn't show where the skirt dips down in the back, so I made my samples with the lining having a straight hem all around at about knee length.

You can see on my samples no lining shows.

But, the design department at Simplicity thought the lining should be the same length as the skirt. And, if you look at the pattern envelope above you can see the lining at the back of the legs of the pink skirt.

SO ... this is a design choice and you have options.

Another thing I played around with, but didn't go though was using 2 colors.  On this sample the inner most layer is a darker pink. The lining and waistband are the same shade.

This is an effect I like a lot, so something else to think about. Actually, it would be fun to maybe have 3 different colors.

Thank you for these posts!! I like to see but am not a professional. I'm having trouble understanding where the solid underskirt pattern piece is. I'm wondering do I cut an extra piece of 7&8 and sew as I did the other layers?

The solid underskirt pattern is a circular pattern, not a straight piece like the tulle. I don't have a copy of the published pattern so I don't know which pieces are 7&8. But the underskirt is in two pieces a front and a back. It is cut in a circle, so the are no gathers when it is sewn to the inner yoke.
Hope that helps.

I made the tulle skirt version for adults from Simplicity 1427, but I would LOVE to see a high-low tulle skirt like this for adult sizes as well. :)

Hello, I am sewing this wonderful pattern and have a question. For the design option of added another color for one of layers how many yards of tulle would you need. For size 12 on pattern it gives 13 yards for total skirt. Thank you.

If I remember correctly the skirt has 4 layers, SO each layer would need about 3 1/2 yards, but tulle is cheap, so you might want to get 4 yd. per layer.
Should turn out pretty!
