Thrift Store Antigone

While I do have some professional costuming credentials ... I've spent more time costuming amateur and school productions.  This is why I rely on my local thrift stores.

A couple years ago I was asked to do the costumes for a production of Antigone and my budget was zero, but they stretched it $100 ... PHEW!

So, off to the thrift store!  I bought sheets and curtains.  Off to the craft store where I bought fabric paint, sponge brushes and plastic sheets to make stencils. All of the costumes I am going to show you were made from these materials.

And I end with a nice group shot of Creon, Antigone and the chorus.

I count about 15 people on stage, so this's kinda like the old travel guides to "Europe on $5 a Day"--Antigone on $6 a costume. When you *can't* talk a production into increasing your budget, what strategies do you have--ask cast members to bring in the sheets and the paints? Hold a bake sale to raise the money? Repurpose the costumes from last season's production, even if it was West Side Story (Hmmm, Antigone in New York....) This is a great peek into "make it work" costuming.
